Before you call it faulty

Most instruments sent back to us are working. These four things are what usually separates a reading from no reading.

1 in/s

Move slowly

No faster than one inch (25 mm) per second, about a quarter inch off the surface. Sweeping quickly is the single most common reason a real leak reads as nothing.

0

Stop the air

Fans, wind and open doors carry the leak away before it reaches the probe. Shut things down and let the air settle first.

Back off, zero, move in

If the reading stays high after you move away, back off until it settles, press ZERO, then approach again. Repeating this is how you narrow down.

Know the false friends

Alcohol-based coil cleaners and leak-detection sprays respond about as strongly as refrigerant itself. So do solvents, perfume and hot steam.

Still nothing? Test the instrument against a known source — a brief release of refrigerant, or on the SFD201 an unlit gas lighter held near the probe. If it does not respond to that, write to us.

Questions

Frequently asked

What gases can this detector sense?
The SFD200 detects refrigerants. The SFD201 detects refrigerants and also natural gas, LPG, propane, gasoline vapor, alcohol and other combustible gases.
What should I do before using it?
Switch it on in clean, calm air away from the leak, so it zeroes on clean air, and let the 30-second countdown finish.
It did not respond to a leak I know is there. What should I check?
Move the probe no faster than one inch (25 mm) per second, about a quarter inch from the surface. Stop any airflow — fans, wind and open doors carry the leak away before it reaches the probe. Make sure the system is under pressure, and use high sensitivity.
Why does it sometimes give a false signal?
Strong airflow, hot steam, perfume, solvents and strong odors all disturb the sensor. Alcohol-based coil cleaners and leak-detection sprays respond about as strongly as refrigerant itself.
I cannot see the display outdoors in bright sun.
Shade it with your free hand or with your body — the reading and the bar graph are easiest to read out of direct sunlight. You do not have to watch the screen to work: the buzzer beeps faster as the concentration climbs.
Does the sensor need conditioning?
Yes. Running it in clean air for several hours improves sensitivity, especially when the instrument is new or has been in storage. This is normal for this sensor type.
How do I know it is working?
Test it against a known source — a brief release of refrigerant, or on the SFD201 an unlit gas lighter held near the probe.
Will it tell me which gas it found?
No. It responds to a range of gases and reports concentration, not identity.
The reading stays high after I move away. Is that a fault?
No. Back off until it settles, press ZERO, then move in again. Repeating this is how you narrow down to the leak.
How should I store it?
In clean, dry, ventilated air — not in a vehicle. Avoid long exposure to gas, which ages the sensor and reduces sensitivity.
