Getting a real result

Four things that decide whether you find it

1 in/s

Move slowly

No faster than one inch (25 mm) per second, about a quarter inch off the surface. Sweeping quickly is the single most common reason a real leak reads as nothing.

Stop the air

Fans, wind and open doors carry the leak away before it reaches the probe. Shut things down and let the air settle first.

Back off, zero, move in

If the reading stays high after you move away, back off until it settles, press ZERO, then approach again. Repeating this is how you narrow down.

Know the false friends

Alcohol-based coil cleaners and leak-detection sprays respond about as strongly as refrigerant itself. So do solvents, perfume and hot steam.

The full procedure is in section 9 of the user manual.
